  • Butler women win Region VI outdoor championships

  • The Butler women's outdoor track and field team won both the Region VI and Jayhawk West conference trophies for the 2013 outdoor season Saturday. The Grizzlies won both trophies during the indoor season.
    The Grizzly women had seven first-place finishes over the two-day meet, with three runner-up finishes and three third-place finishes.
    Fiona Masai and Remona Burchell highlighted the meet for Butler with a pair of first-place finishes. Masai took first in the 3000-meter steeplechase and the 5000-meter run, while Burchell won the 100-meter and 200-meter dash. Latesha Bigby was the fifth top-place individual winner for the Grizzlies by winning the 400-meter hurdles. Bigby also placed third in the 100-meter hurdles.
    Rounding out the first-place finishes were the 4x100-meter relay (Carole Idolphine, Cydnie Brown, Kiarra Baker and Burchell) and the 4x800-meter relay (Masai, Collymore, Jonelle Reinert and Nhaieemah Horne) teams. Finishing runner-up was Collymore (1500-meter and 5000-meter run) and Reinert (400-meter dash). Idolphine (400-meter hurdles) and Horne (400-meter dash) placed third in their respective events in addition to Bigby's 100m hurdle finish.
    Other top-five finishes were Masai (800m run, fourth), Josie Wright (shot put, fourth), Aadrian McCollum (10,000-meter run, fifth) and Andrene Wells (400-meter hurdles). Rounding out the medal winners were Rachael Meier (high jump, seventh), Samantha Wyatt (javelin, seventh) and Trisha Christmas (400-meter dash, eighth).
    The Butler men finished eighth in the Region VI standings with 47 points and two first-place finishes. The 4x400-meter relay team of Alfred Larry, Paris Carson, Jamelle Ardis and Steven Calloway took first, while Larry won the 400-meter dash. Taking third was the 4x100-meter relay team of Shauron Jennings, Justin Breaux, Freddy Gobewole and Cameron Hampton.
    The Butler men had three fourth-place finishes, including the 4x800-meter relay team of Larry, Coty Williams, Taylor Parker and Adam Kelsey. Individually taking fourth place were Heber Jimenez (3000-meter steeplechase) and Aaron Cain (400-meter hurdles). Other medal winners were Paris Carson (400-meter dash, seventh), Tyler Knight (pole vault, seventh), Coty Williams (800-meter run, eighth) and Lonell Watkins (long jump, eighth).
