  • Kolton Schenker calmly waited for his pitch.
He got it. It was a fast ball. Down the middle.
Schenker blasted the pitch to deep right-center field, more than enough time for Chase Winter to score from third base. The Orioles' bench cleared, then chest bumped both Winter and Schenker, who had just lifted Augusta's baseball team to a 10-9 victory against Buhler in the eighth inning of Monday's doubleheader nightcap.
"I saw a fast ball, and I just hammered it," said Schenker. "It's an ugly win, but I'll take it."
The win was both exhilirating and a sigh of relief after the Orioles blew a big lead in one inning to the Crusaders, who forced the extra innings. But the win gave Augusta a sweep of Buhler, a perfect way to send off the seniors for Senior Night.
"I liked it. A win is a win," Winter said. "It was a little scary."
The Orioles built a big lead in both games. In Game 1, the Orioles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Michael Albright crushed a shot deep to center field to drive in Winter and Schenker. Connor Hurst got a hold of the next one for an RBI. Hurst also had a 2-RBI shot to left field in the second inning for a 7-0 lead. Augusta went on to win 10-0 for a run-rule victory.
In his final start at home, senior Tyler Roberts finished with four strikeouts in a clean outing on the mound.
"We've had a great seasons except for a couple losses," Roberts said. "But it's been fun playing with these young kids."
Roberts said he's enjoyed his role of being a leader and helping the younger players develop and mature. Senior Jacob Johnson said he was worried the Orioles were going to blow Game 2, but was glad to see the Orioles pulled it together.
"We just had to come together and get the bats hot and get hits," Johnson said.
Schenker dominated for four innings on the mound before Buhler's rally started. But the Orioles got the sweep in dramatic fashion, which should help their seeding for Regionals next week.
"It feels good to get two more wins," senior Tyler Bond said.
