The City of El Dorado received another award for their work, this time for the new spray park at the North Main Park.
They were presented with the Innovation Award from the Kansas Association of City/County Management for the construction of the park.
The award goes to KACM members who develop new and innovative programs.
While the first spray park was built by a contractor in 2007 in Graham Park, there were not enough sales tax dollars available to build this latest spray park with a contractor, so at the idea of City Manager Herb Llewellyn, city employees stepped in.
“It’s so easy for departments to compartmentalize and think about their specific items they do every day,” said Llewellyn. “This spray park, doing it in-house, forced our departments to work together collaboratively. No department had the single expertise to do it. It took all of them working together.”
The departments involved included engineering, public works, public utilities and parks.
That collaboration is why they received the award.
