MULVANE—Augusta's baseball team had one of those days it'd soon rather forget.
The Orioles' normally reliable defense to this point of the season had several lapses that proved costly. Mulvane scored two unearned runs in the first two innings of Friday's doubleheader opener. The Wildcats led 7-1 at one point before the Orioles put together a rally that came up short in a 9-8 loss.
Mulvane's pitching got the better of the Orioles in Game 2 for a 4-0 shutout to complete the sweep.
Augusta took advantage of a Mulvane error to take a 1-0 lead in the opener after Mason Hiser, who led off with a single, was able to cross home after a Mulvane misplay at second base.
The Orioles, though, had trouble fielding grounders in the infield and had a couple drops on routine plays in the outfield. Mulvane jumped ahead 7-1, four runs of which were unearned, after five innings.
The Orioles put together a rally after starting the seventh down 9-5. With the bases loaded, Ian Rogers hit a one-out double to right field to clear them for three runs. Augusta had the tying run at third base before Mulvane escaped with the win.
The Wildcats dominated from the mound in Game 2 as Augusta couldn't put together much offense to get on the scoreboard.
Augusta will try to bounce back with a tough road doubleheader at Clearwater Monday, weather permitting.
