The Central Kansas Community Foundation (CKCF) on behalf of the 2013 Central Kansas Kids FUNd awarded a $3,100 grant for El Dorado LunchBox: Summer Meals for Kids, a project sponsored by the El Dorado Schools, the Kansas Food Bank and Kids Need To Eat (KN2E) in El Dorado.
The fundraising goal for this project is $10,000 to provide 4,000 sack lunches to children under age 18 in El Dorado this summer.
This grant coupled with donations received to date bring the project half way toward its goal. All donations are made to the Kansas Food Bank, designating the El Dorado LunchBox program, and are tax deductible. A $25 donation pays for 10 lunches.
All children attending the USD 490 Summer Academy will be offered a free breakfast and lunch as part of its food service program. The Summer Academy offers a wide variety of fun-filled K-12 activities at Skelly Elementary from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday throughout June. A USD 490 shuttle bus will transport children from its other schools to Skelly over the summer. The deadline to register is May 3. For details, visit the USD 490 Web site at eldoradoschools.org.
Then from July 1 through Aug. 8, Kids Need To Eat will distribute free sack lunches at Skelly School to all children under age 18 on weekdays. Children only need to sign in using their first name and age - no other information is asked or required.
In addition, Need-Based Weekend Foodpacks will be distributed on Thursdays from June 6 through Aug. 8 for children in households with the most severe food insecurity in the community based on referrals from local child-serving programs.
The First Baptist Church and Numana, Inc. are donating shelf-stable foods for distribution with the Weekend Foodpacks and the sack lunches. Numana Community Gardens plans to provide fresh produce.
