  • WICHITA—Augusta's girls soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-1 victory at Wichita Independent Tuesday afternoon.
The Orioles took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break after Shelby Clay hit a shot that deflected off a defender and went into the net.
Lea Wilegalla scored midway through the second half on an assist by Meagan Grantham to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead. Grantham made her second assist of the game after Lydia Ehrmann took a pass from her and booted it in the net from about 25 yards out for the Orioles' final goal.
Augusta finished withnine shots, five on goal, and three corner kicks. Independent had nine shots, six on goal, with two corners.
Independent's lone goal came on a rebound of a shot during a breakaway in the final seconds of the game. After Taylor Childers made the initial save, the ball slowly rolled across the goal line as the Oriole defenders didn't quite get to the rebound in time.
Coach Monty Rowland said the win brought the Orioles a lot of excitement. He added that they showed a little more improvement, though they still have room to get better. But he said it was nice for the team to win after having a couple of close losses earlier this season, including a couple of overtime games.
The Orioles will play for their second win of the year today when they host the Circle Thunderbirds. The Orioles then play a makeup game at Winfield Friday afternoon.
