  • The Circle Storm, a fifth and sixth grade basketball team comprised of girls from the Towanda and Oil Hill elementary schools, captured first place at the 9th annual Joan Linot Korth Memorial Tournament held at Circle Middle School last Friday and Saturday.
In the championship game versus arch-rival Bluestem, the Storm made a dramatic comeback to take the crown.
Down by 7 with only 3:30 to go, the Storm refused to quit and completed their undefeated run through the tournament to earn the championship victory.
Earlier in the tournament the Storm defeated the Circle Slammers 28-8, then Bluestem 32-23 and Belle Plaine 28-12, before taking the tournament championship over Bluestem 22-19.
The Storm ended their year with an overall record of 16-2, and they also avenged each loss they had earlier in the year.
By doing so, the Storm finished the year in first place in the Walnut Valley Recreation League.
The Circle Storm was coached by Calvin Varner and Dick Nibarger.
For the past 9 years, Jean Gibbs has hosted Joan Linot Korth Memorial tournament to honor her sister who was tragically killed in an auto accident.
All monies raised goes to a scholarship for Circle High seniors as they further their education in college.
