Fans of college basketball in Kansas knew the Shockers from Wichita were good, but this good?
The clock has not struck 12 yet for the cinderella Shockers as they find themselves in the Final Four for the second time in school history and first time since 1965 after defeating #2 seed Ohio State 70-66 Saturday.
The feelings after running to the Sweet 16 defeating #1 Gonzaga of most (including myself) assumed the Shockers would have an off game then LaSalle went down.
The Shockers are the personification of what March Madness is all about.
Everyone has 40 minutes to win the game and anyone can beat anyone on any given day, as the Shockers have proved this tournament.
Who would have thought the mid-major from Missouri Valley Conference would make a run defeating two previous #1 ranked programs on the way to the Final Four in Atlanta.
The fact is no one.
The Wichita State faithful and locals had them maybe winning a game or two but Final Four, come on now.
Here is the proof.
Of the 8.15 million brackets played on the ESPN’s tournament bracket challenge, 3.6 million people had Ohio State in the Final Four and only 19,157 had Wichita State.
It gets even more glaring for the whole Final Four, with of the 8.15 million brackets posted only 47 had all the correct Final Four teams in Syracuse, Michigan, Louisville and Wichita State.
No one saw it coming.
It is the first time for a Missouri Valley Conference school to make the Final Four since the great Larry Bird led the Indiana State Sycamores in 1979.
With the victory, the Shockers have 30 victories on the year which is a new school record surpassing the 29 victories for the 2010-2011 NIT championship team.
Now the Shockers head to Atlanta to square off with another #1 seed in the Big East champions the Louisville Cardinals who are coming off an emotional and thunderous rout of the Duke Blue Devils in the Midwest Regional Final 85-63.
If for some reason you have not been able to watch this team in action during this year’s tournament I implore you to watch this Saturday as the giant slayer Shockers go at it again.
