Those attending the 1st Annual Battle of the Bands heard a variety of music before selecting their favorite during the event Thursday evening.
Butler Community College’s Radio Station, 88.1 The Grizz, hosted the battle.
The first to take the stage was Looking For Yesterday, a punk rock band, that has been around since 2008. Their musical inspirations include New Found Glory, ADTR and Blink 182, to name a few. They have played Hit the Lights and went on a two-week trip from southeast Kansas to Indiana. They try to play two to three shows a month.
Next to take the stage was Gabe & Benny, a rap and hip/hop group.
They are originally from El Dorado where they met at a church in high school. Three years later they are now juniors at Emporia State University. They have an upbeat style which they think will bring a refreshing sense of positivity to the pop/hip-hop genre. Their biggest passion is to use their music and the talents God has given them to connect with people all over.
Next up was Contagious Wednesday, a rock group.
They were formed in 2010, with some of their musical inspirations including Tenacious D, Red Hot Chili Peppers and System of A Down. They are working on new originals and setting up shows.
The fourth competitor was Wesley Styles, performing rap and hip/hop.
Styles is promoting his fourth mix tape, “Making Conversation,” and is setting up shows across the midwest. His short-term goals include getting more radio time, working with bigger names in the industry, releasing his first iTunes album, offering more merchandise and doing shows in different states.
The final group was The Fever Trend, an indie rock group.
Although they have strong roots in rock and roll, they strive to create a sound that is innovative and fresh. They write to fulfill the urge of wanting to be heard and to connect the world through their creations of electronically tinged blues-rock. They are preparing to record and self release their debut full-lenth album.
Following the performances, audiences members used their two purple pieces to vote for their favorite groups.
After a break for some stand up comedy, the winners were announced.
Third place went to Looking For Yesterday, second was Contagious Wednesday and the winner was Gabe & Benny.
The radio station is working to become more known in the community, as well as to allow organizations to have a voice through them. The students are on the air from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, the students host talk shows covering a variety of topics. Each two hour period is staffed by a different student.
