Butler County Sheriff's Deputies made an arrest in a burglary that started at about midnight in the area of 2414 SE Hwy 54, according to Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet.
Deputies were checking on a vehicle parked near the gate of a business called The Barn Guys at about midnight and found the truck had been stolen out of Wichita on Feb. 13 at about 1 p.m.
"While they were investigating, the deputies heard noises from the rear of the building," Herzet said.
They thought they heard the suspect flee through the trees to the north of the building. Herzet said they notified a K-9 unit from Andover to help track the suspect, but they called off the search at 2 a.m. when they still had not found the suspect.
"During the investigation it did appear he had broken into the business," Herzet said. "He had stolen some gasoline and was in the process of stealing some tools and other things."
Deputies cleared the call at about 7 this morning. The owner, who also had been out to the scene at 2 a.m., went to work and found a surprise when he unlocked the door.
"He was surprised to find a gentleman in his business looking through some drawers," Herzet said. "The suspect ran out the back door and the owner chased him about 20 yards."
He was unable to catch him and called law enforcement again.
The Sheriff's Office, with assistance from Andover Police and the Highway Patrol, performed a ground search and put a helicopter in the air to search the wooded area.
They looked until about 10 this morning, still not finding him, and cleared the call.
Then about noon, officers responded to another call in the Andover area for a residential alarm when they spotted a suspect that matched the description from earlier.
"We had an idea he was the suspect we were looking for," Herzet said.
Deputies arrested Dusty Lehman, a 26-year-old white male, of a former address on SW Santa Fe Lake Road.
"He gave up without incident," Herzet said.
Herzet said Lehman was cooperative throughout the interview. He was arrested for burglary, possession of drug paraphernalia, theft and trespassing, as well as other possible charges. He was arrested and taken to Butler County Jail.
Andover schools locked down Sunflower Elementary School, Andover Central and Middle Schools and the Andover campus of Butler Community College while law enforcement searched for the suspect. As an extra precaution all of the other seven schools in USD 385 also were locked down. This was not a full lockdown, with the students being able to move about inside the buildling. The lockdown was lifted at about noon, with all entrances remaining locked throughout the day as a precaution.
