Sunlight Children’s Advocacy and Rights Foundation (SCARF) was pleased to receive a $2,500 donation from Westar Energy Foundation in late December 2012.
“This donation puts us closer to being able to build and maintain our Sunshine Children’s Home, which will be a safe place for children who are removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect,” said SCARF Executive Director Suzi Thien. “Westar Energy Foundation is familiar with our existing program, Sunlight Child Advocacy Center, and felt our Children’s Home was a worthy recipient of their community improvement funding. We are thrilled that they honored us in this way.”
According to Westar Energy Foundation President Cynthia McCarvel, the Foundation supports programs that will “improve academic performance of youths and prepare youths for the world of work and community leadership.”
In a letter announcing the donation to SCARF, McCarvel said, “The commitment we have to provide service to our customers and fellow citizens goes beyond simply providing efficient energy delivery at a reasonable price…It is our hope that we can maximize our impact by supporting programs that prepare youths to successfully participate in our society and improve the communities in which they live.”
SCARF is based in El Dorado and serves Butler, Elk and Greenwood counties. Its mission is “to provide resources and facilities that support and protect abused and neglected children and their families.”
In 2012, its program Sunlight Child Advocacy Center provided 186 investigative interviews of alleged victims of child abuse.
