If you’re headed west out of Pratt and find yourself in Greensburg, hungry and looking for a good, affordable place to eat, here’s my recommendation: Mikey’s 54 Diner.
Mikey’s has been in business since May 2012 and began serving breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. a couple of months ago. In fact, it’s the only place to purchase a full-service breakfast in town.
Breakfast prices are reasonable, with entrees ranging from $1.89 for biscuits and gravy to $5.49 for a full breakfast. Lunch is also a bargain. For vegetarians, you can buy a grilled cheese for $2.00 (a little extra for your choice of different cheeses). If you’re a meat lover, you can sink your teeth into a bacon cheeseburger for only $5. Add your choice of fries at $2.50—whether Curly Qs, Onion Dippers, Sweet Potato Fries, or Fried Pickles—and you have a meal. The restaurant also features daily specials, like the homemade chili I enjoyed there recently.
Of course, if you’re like me, you may want to include a malt or shake. Mikey’s recently expanded its selection of flavors to include not only the standard vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry but also pineapple, butterscotch, cherry, real peanut butter, and marshmallow. It all hearkens back to the days of the Lunchbox, which used to offer essentially the same flavor options when it was open before the tornado.
Admittedly, I am not a huge hamburger fan but when I have a hankering for one I like it to be prepared like Mikey’s does it: grilled bun and freshly cooked meat with a generous selection of fresh toppings on the side: onions, pickles, tomatoes, and even jalapenos if you like.
Perhaps the best thing about the restaurant is its service. You place your order at the front, using an order form if you choose, and before long it arrives at your table. The staff is friendly and, from my perspective, most of the customers are local. That is, I recognize many faces from the six years I worked daily in Greensburg at the Iroquois Center.
All in all, Mikey’s is a good place to enjoy a tasty meal. The service is friendly and efficient, and the prices are affordable. Hats off to Terri Butler and her crew. Terri took over as co-manager in July, joining Nora Taylor (aka Mikey’s wife). Conveniently located on the east side of Mikey’s Convenience Store, the restaurant is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily during the winter.
