The Bluejays already won the regular-season title. Now they have one final reason to celebrate.
The Augusta 7th-grade boys basketball team completed its season with a Pioneer League tournament championship after defeating Goddard 35-30 Tuesday night. The Bluejays, seeded No. 1 for the tournament, finished the season with an impressive 13-2 record.
The championship win didn't come easily. The Bluejays got off to a sluggish start as Goddard jumped to a 14-6 first-quarter lead. The Bluejays slowly climbed back in the game, getting within five points at halftime. The Bluejays showed they wanted it in the fourth quarter, outscoring Goddard 10-4 for the win.
Jonny Clausing led the Bluejays with 13 points. Noah Johnson scored a dozen points. Clay Wesbrooks added five points, Nate Kelley had three and Blake Bevan chipped in with two points.
After a first-round bye, Augusta defeated Ark City 40-32 behind a strong second quarter. Kelley finished the game with a team-high 16 points. Clausing had 14 points. Johnson added eight and Wesbrooks scored two.
For the 7th-grade team, it's the first PL tournament championship win since the 1996-97 season.
"A great season for a great group of boys," AMS boys head coach AJ Bodyk said.
