  • The El Dorado Wildcats bounced back from their defeat at Augusta with a come from behind win at home against intercounty rival Circle 51-48.
    “We scored a couple more than they did and both teams played hard. I would imagine that Coach Stucky would say that they could have played better. I would like to think that we could of as well. We struggled to stay within our scheme,” said El Dorado head coach Gary Melcher.
    Circle came out tough, coming off their upset win over #3 McPherson they earned a 14-11 lead after the first quarter.
    El Dorado fought back in the second quarter and tied the game at 25-25 with a long range buzzer beating three-pointer by Travis House going into the locker room.
    The Thunderbirds took control in the third quarter and outscored El Dorado 13-9 to lead 38-34 with 8 minutes to play.
    El Dorado had its highest scoring quarter in the fourth, pouring in 17 points to Circle’s 10 and pulled away at the end at the free throw line.
    “We knew that they were going to come in pretty confident after their last game. They shot well and played well, we stepped it up on offense and defense and earned the result,” said El Dorado guard Travis House.
    Senior Collin Just said, “It was real important after our last game, we had to get back in it and figure out how to play as a team again and tonight was really good for us.”
    Trevor Crain led El Dorado with 13 points including two three pointers. Jared Haury had 11 points and Travis House had 10 points.
    Aaron Riffel had 8 points, Collin Just added 6 points and Wes Haines added 3 points.
    “We talked a little bit about how we haven’t lost two in a row this year. It was a good bounce back win for us and they have some good young kids that play hard. I was happy that we were able to win,” said Melcher.
    Circle was led by Kaden Kirkpatrick who had 16 points including three three-pointers. Paul Richard had 12 points, and Dominic Lara had 6 points.
     
    Lady T-Birds hold off Wildcats in overtime
    After playing each other in the Lady Cat Classic, the Lady T-Birds and Lady Wildcats were back at it Tuesday going to extra minutes with Circle prevailing 47-42.
    Both teams played to a stalemate in the first quarter at 8-8 before Circle erupted for 18 points in the second quarter to take a 26-19 lead at halftime.
    El Dorado fought back on the offensive and defensive boards and pressuring Circle into their front court.
    Page 2 of 2 - The Lady Wildcats outscored Circle 10-7 in the third and the game sat at 33-29 heading to the fourth.
    Again El Dorado outscored Circle in the the period 11-7 and forced the game to overtime with the game knotted up 40-40.
    The game turned for Circle when El Dorado thought they had scored the first basket in overtime as Hannah Helferich dropped in a lay up but was called for a charge.
    Circle took the ensuing possesion and got points at the other end.
    The Thunderbirds would go on to outscore El Dorado 7-2 in the overtime period for the 47-42 victory.
    Circle was 14-28 from the line and El Dorado was 3-7.
    The Thunderbirds were led by Alexis Wiebe with 10 points going 6-8 from the line. Katelynn Wilson had 9 points.
    Alison Kirkham had 7 points, and Katie Frankenberry and Jacy Gibbs each had 6 points. Allyssa Kirkham scored 5 points
    El Dorado was led by 19 points from Andrea Valadez including three three pointers.
    Justice Rice dropped in 10 points and Destiny Smith and Hannah Helferich had 4 points each. Erin Hildreth had 3 points for the Wildcats.
