Most people know about the United Way of El Dorado when they solicit contributions during their annual campaign in October and November.
Ever wonder what is going on with United Way during the other 10 months of the year? Well, the United Way is a “year round” effort indeed, although some of those efforts may be behind the scenes.
Of course, the major activity is done every day by the 24 agencies supported by the United Way. Those agencies provide services to the youth, seniors, disabled and disadvantaged in they community. It is the reason they exist.
In addition, United Way stays busy:
• coordinating with the various agencies to determine their needs
• handling a variety of requests from the public for services, often connecting those individuals with the proper agency.
• wit the 21 member volunteer United Way of El Dorado Board of Directors that meets on a regular basis throughout the year, and oversees the operation of the organization. The 2013 Board chair is Gail Gomez.
• with the staff and volunteers who spend many hours planning and preparing for the next year campaign.
The Campaign chair for 2013-2014 is Sandy Zieman, who works in Butler County administration. Last year was a successful year for the local United Way, and thanks to the generosity of the citizens, a total of $376,000 was raised and will be distributed to the participating agencies throughout the year.
In order to highlight the work of their agencies, there will be a series of articles indicating the critical services provided by these agencies.
