  • Augusta's wrestling team had some ups and downs at the Chanute tournament Saturday.
The Orioles finished on a strong note by taking third place in the team standings of a competitive field. They scored 118 points. Derby won the team title with 174 points. Topeka Seaman was second with 157.5 points. Andover Central was fourth (114) and Chanute, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A as of last week, took fifth (108.5).
The Orioles had three finalists, but only one came away with a title. Jacob Goldenstein had no problems with Mill Valley's Landon Scott in the 106-pound championship. Goldenstein won 14-1 to remain undefeated; his record has improved to 26-0 on the season.
Quentin Spainhower (160) had three convincing wins to advance to the finals, but Derby's Dakota Driskill was able to top Spainhower 5-0 to claim the title. Spainhower now is 23-4 on the season.
Jacob Hill (170) did some of his best wrestling recently as he won two matches with pins on way to the final. But Hill ran into Topeka-Seaman's Bryant Guillen, who is undefeated and ranked No. 1 in All-Class. Guillen beat Hill 15-0 to win the title. Hill's record now is 23-5 on the season.
Wright Bosley (182) took third place. Cory White (138) took fourth place. Brett Hamilton (145)and Colton Clayborn (152) both took fifth place. Nathan Moore (113) and Jake Ehrlich (285) both took sixth place.
Augusta is off Thursday and will compete in the two-day Rose Hill tournament this coming weekend. The Orioles close the regular season the following week with a dual at Andale and a tournament at Remington. Augusta will host a Class 4A regional tournament Feb. 15 through 16.
