My mother always greeted us with a hot breakfast before we headed to school. My favorite dish was a bowl of oatmeal enhanced with fresh butter and brown sugar. Over the years I've opted to omit the butter and flavor my hot cereal with honey. This week I added homemade cranberry sauce to the oatmeal bowl for some additional vitamins.

Oatmeal is a staple in our household. I use oats to make muffins, meatloaf and peanut butter chocolate chip cookies.

I smiled yesterday morning when my son prepared a bowl of hot oatmeal, stating he was eating it for the protein. My son is budding athlete and has been listening to his coach regarding not only the benefits of excercise but also the advantages of following a healthy diet.

I doubt he knows the true benefits of eating a bowl of oatmeal. According to motherearthliving.com several health benefits include lowering cholesterol, boosting the immune system, obtaining antioxidents for heart protection, stabilizing blood sugar and lowering the risk of diabetes.
