  • It was supposed to be one of the highlights of a full night of high school basketball.
The undefeated El Dorado Wildcats came into the Roundhouse Friday night to face a McPherson High boys basketball team that was coming off a shaky win against Rose Hill Tuesday night in what was expected to be an athletic game between the two schools.
The Bullpups had other ideas, however, putting the buzzsaw to El Dorado in an 18-7 second quarter and never looked back on the way to a 65-40 AVCTL victory.
The two teams went back and forth in first quarter, with McPherson able to use a brief run at the end of the period to take a 19-14 lead at the buzzer.
The second quarter was huge for McPherson, as the Bullpups opened up the throttle all the way with the 18-7 drubbing that left El Dorado getting more and more frustrated.
The second quarter rattled the Wildcats' confidence, as the Pups kept pouring it on in the second half, outscoring El Dorado 14-10 and 14-9 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
The Pups (8-1) shot 61.1 percent from the field in the second half and went 23-for-44 on the game, while holding El Dorado (7-1) to only 10-of-25 shooting from the field. McPherson only managed three from deep in the game, two of which coming from Peter Horton.
El Dorado was 14-of-20 from the line.
For the Bullpups, Kyler Kinnamon had 21 points on 7-for-13 shooting, while Marcus Houghton and Keaton Sorenson both had 16.
El Dorado was led by Travis House's 22, which included a first quarter dunk.
    McPherson — Houghton 7-12 2-4 16; Stos 0-2 2-2 2; Sorenson 7-9 2-6 16; Bahr 0-2 2-2 2; Kinnamon 7-13 6-7 21; Horton, P. 2-2 6; Gabel 0-0 2-2 2.
    El Dorado — McAdoo 0-0 1-2 1; House 5-8 9-12 22; Riffel 1-2 0-1 3; Crain 2-4 2-2 7; Scott 2-4 0-1 5; Haury 0-2 2-2 2.

Lady Wildcats lose big at McPherson
The McPherson High girls put on a defensive and offensive exhibition against El Dorado Friday night at the Roundhouse on their way to a 70-20 win over El Dorado.
El Dorado never once scored double digits in a single quarter, with McPherson allowing only a pair of long-range buckets in each of the first two quarters, as the defense clamped down on the paint and refused to let the Wildcats get anywhere close to the basket.
Hailey Ruder, Moria Pyle and Abby Pederson both had three pointers in an 18-3 first quarter, while the Pups held El Dorado scoreless until the 1:02 mark, when Andrea Valadez was able to make a three-ball fall for the Wildcats.
Page 2 of 2 - The second quarter was even worse for El Dorado, as the Bullpups really hit their stride, outscoring their opponents 22-3, taking a 40-6 advantage into the locker room at the half. MHS was only 8-for-23 from the field, but an outstanding 19-for-24 from the foul line in the first half.
El Dorado tried to get something going in the third, but Pederson dropped seven points in quarter as the Bullpups kept the pressure up. They never let the Wildcats score more than seven points in either quarter of the second half.
McPherson finished with 20-of-47 shooting from the field and 23-of-31 from the foul line. El Dorado was only 8-of-35 from the field.
Valadez led the Wildcats with 13 points.
    McPherson — Ruder 4-9 2-2 13; Pyle 3-4 0-0 8; Scheidegger 3-3 1-2 7; Pederson 5-14 2-2 14; Barnes 1-4 8-10 10; Malm 0-1 1-2 1; Hoffman 0-1 2-2 2; Loecker 4-9 7-11 15.
