  • Dorothy J. Melcher, 98, of Marion, passed away Jan. 10, 2013, at St. Luke Hospital in Marion. She was born at Mt. Hope, on Sept. 2, 1914, the daughter of Harley and Emma (Wright) Moreland. She was a 1932 graduate of Mt. Hope High School, where she enjoyed playing basketball. After graduation she went to work as a telephone operator and was later transferred to the Florence office, that is where she would meet her future husband. On March 14, 1936, she was united in marriage to Wilbur Melcher. They lived in Florence and later made their home in Marion. Their union was blessed with one son, Gary. In later years, Dorothy went to work in the Marion County Register of Deeds office. She was an active member of Valley United Methodist Church and had served as treasurer. She was an avid Kansas State University fan, especially football, holding season tickets since 1969, she rarely missed a game. She dearly loved her family, and enjoyed spending time with them and supporting them in their many activities. She was preceded in death by her husband Wilbur, and her sisters, Geneva Dickerson, Pauline Allen, and Gladys Pike. She is survived by her son, Gary and wife Debbie Melcher of El Dorado; three grandchildren, Keri and husband Chris Hadley of El Dorado, Jeffrey and wife Kristen Melcher of Lawrence and Michael Melcher of Marysville; and two great-grandchildren, Jenna and Brooke Hadley. Visitation with family will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion. Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at Valley United Methodist Church, Marion. Interment will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mt. Hope. Memorial Funds established for the Valley UMC or Marion High School Coaches’ Scholarship Fund (MHSCSF) in care of Zeiner Funeral Home, 205 Elm, Marion, KS, 66861.
