Augusta’s boys junior varsity basketball team had been close a couple times this season and have had some brilliant performances, but for the first time, the Orioles have a win to show for it.
Dustyn McEachern made three 3-pointers and scored 19 points, Michael Albright hit a pair of threes and added 16 and the Orioles got their first win of the season by beating Clearwater 58-46 Tuesday night.
Caleb Faulconer added six, Chase Hull had five, Caleb Laubhan and Connor Hurst both added four. Tristan Finch and Cortlan Jackson both added two.
The freshman boys teams improved to 5-3 on the season with a 60-44 win despite a 27-point effort from Clearwater’s Austin Smith.
Cole Howerton led the team with 15 points and seven rebounds. Preston Bevan had 11 and Jaden Shryock scored 10. Josh Korthals and Cody Wesbrooks both grabbed six rebounds. Augusta was 17-of-24 (71 percent) from the free throw line.
In a decisive third quarter, the Orioles held Clearwater to six points and were able to score 17 themselves for a 48-30 lead. Smith was held to two points in the quarter for the Indians.
"We were able to do some of the things we talked about at halftime and give ourselves the separation and comfortable lead," freshman coach Roger Lawrence said.
