With the new year comes New Year’s resolutions, many of which involve losing weight or getting in better shape. The El Dorado YMCA is working to help people accomplish those resolutions.
“I think one of the hard things about staying on routine is just getting bored with it,” said Ben Coffey, YMCA executive director.
To help keep people interested, the Y has added some new cardio equipment, as well as upgraded others.
They now have 14 new treadmills, which offer several new features.
They also added 16 new Schwinn bicycles a couple of months ago.
Another new addition is two Stairmasters, as well as two new rowers.
“The basic fundamental of it (exercising) is to burn calories,” Coffey said. “The trick is to stick with it. There are nine different ways to exercise in this one area (he pointed out upstairs). People like change, people like new toys and also accountability.”
One way to stay accountable is through the life changing challenge on Mobile Fit, where people can accumulate points to win prizes.
Mobile Fit creates a customized workout based on the member’s individual goals, fitness experience, and schedule. In addition, Mobile Fit pairs each YMCA member with a Fitness Coach. It also includes information on nutrition.
In addition to the cardio and weights, the Y also offers a number of group exercises, with one popular one being Muscle Pump, as well as Zumba.
Coffey said looking to this next year, one thing of note that is expected to be popular is body weight resistance exercises, such as the Y’s TRX system in the gym.
“We have it here,” he said.
Those wanting to join the Y can do so without a joiners fee until Jan. 14. The YMCA is located at 300 N. Main. For more information, call 320-9622.
