  • Violet Cleone Oliphant, 90, Augusta, formerly of Independence, Kan. died Jan. 1, 2013, at LakePoint in Augusta.
    Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Webb & Rodrick Chapel in Independence. A memorial Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 3, 2012, at the Augusta First Christian Church. Inurnment will be held at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence.
    Violet Cleone Oliphant was born Dec. 8, 1922 in Erie, Kan. to Adalphus E. and Cora (Fulkerson) Johnson. She grew up in Erie, attending the Doane and Meeker grade school and graduating from Erie High School in 1940.
    On June 22, 1947 Violet married Robert C. Oliphant in Chanute. Robert preceded her in death. Violet worked for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita before moving to Independence in 1961. She worked for City Publishing Company for 27 years retiring in 1993. Violet was initiated into the Eastern Star on March 26, 1947 and was a 65 year member of the Order of Eastern Star Sunflower Chapter #147, She volunteered at Mercy Hospital, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chanute, the First United Methodist Church in Independence, and most recently a member of the First Christian Church in Augusta. As a member of the First Christian Church in Augusta Violet became known as one of the noodle ladies which she thoroughly enjoyed. Violet was known for being a hard worker, helping others, being fiercely independent and a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
    Survivors include: two daughters, Mary and husband Brent Forsythe of Huntington, W.Va., and Cora and husband James Berndsen of Augusta; grandchildren, Vanessa Violet Leithoff of Huntington, W.Va. and Emily Marie Haaga Berndsen of Augusta; great-grandchild, known as “Sweet Baby” Tucker Brent Leithoff also of Huntington, W.Va.
    She was preceded in death by three sisters, Zella Fowler, Marie Johnson and Eileen Bush; and one brother Wayne Johnson.
