Jordyn Alexandra Vornes received the honor of being the first baby born in 2013 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.
Chelsea Bishop gave birth to her and Deon Vornes’s daughter at 12:26 p.m. Jan. 1.
Her due date had been Dec. 31, so she wasn’t too far off.
Bishop said they hadn’t planned on having a new year’s baby, rather it had just worked out that way.
“How lucky I am to have her,” she said of her first thoughts upon holding her daughter. “And how beautiful she is.”
“I was just kind of at a loss of words,” Vornes said.
Bishop came to SBA at about 11 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.
“I had been having contractions all day,” she said.
Bishop and Vornes live in Wichita, but she sees Dr. Diane Nightengale at the El Dorado Clinic.
This is Bishop’s second child. She also has a 2-year-old son, David.
Bishop is a student at Butler Community College and Vornes works at Wichita East High School and Levy Special Education Center in Wichita.
Looking to the future, they may have one more child.
“I think he wants to try for a boy,” she said. “Then we’ll be done.”
