Augusta's girls basketball team led by as many as nine midway through the third quarter of its home game against Wichita Collegiate Tuesday night. But defense and several missed shots by the Orioles allowed the Spartans to climb back into the game. Collegiate also made 10 of 13 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter to sneak out a 44-39 win. Casady Marlnee hit a jumper from the wing on a pass from Kalie Robinson to pull the Orioles within four points at 41-37 with less than two minutes to go in the fourth. The Orioles had several chances to cut further into that lead on the next couple of possessions, but they couldn't get any shots to fall. Bre Burkett, who had her best shooting night of the season, finished with 10 points for Augusta. Marlnee scored seven points, Robinson scored six, Abby Tipton and Madie Becker both added four. Taylor Childers, Bailey Reichardt, Maddy Leedom and Brooke Eberhardt all had two points apiece. For a full story, check Thursday's Gazette. The Orioles will play their final game before Christmas break Thursday when they host Winfield.
