Collegiate's boys basketball team was able to piece together some runs with fast breaks and easy baskets off quick inbound passes throughout Tuesday night's basketball game in Augusta. For a large part of the game, the Orioles were disciplined enough to withstand those runs by the Spartans, who are ranked in Class 4A and undefeated. But the Orioles eventually had too many lapses, and Collegiate took full advantage on way to a 70-58 win. Collegiate jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game off four quick baskets, one off of a steal and another off an easy inbound pass. The Orioles fought back to lead 15-14 after a jumper by Kolton Schenker, but the Spartans closed the quarter on another 8-0 run. To start the third quarter, the Spartans made back-to-back 3-pointers to push their lead to 47-38. But Kesten Trebbe later scored on a putback, then found Schenker for a layup to pull Augusta within three at 49-46. Collegiate, though, then scored four straight baskets for another 8-0 run to close the quarter. Chase Winter buried a 3-pointer and Tristan Finch blew by a defender for a layup to pull Augusta within four at 61-57 late in the fourth quarter, but Collegiate was too much for Augusta to handle in the paint down the stretch. The Spartans relied on Riley Kemmer, an All-State player a year ago, who scored eight of the Spartans' final nine points in the game. Augusta (1-4) will host Winfield Thursday night for the final game before Christmas break.
