Chase Banister was clutch for Douglass’ boys basketball team Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs erased a big deficit in the fourth quarter against Bluestem behind Banister’s 13-point quarter. Banister hit a pair of field goals, including a 3-pointer, then drained all eight of his free throws to help Douglass clinch a 65-56 win against the Lions.
Banister finished with a game-high 27 points on eight field goals, three of them 3-pointers.
Cody Holthaus nailed three 3-pointers as well and finished with 21 points. He had five in the fourth quarter. John Gardner had seven of his nine in the fourth, when Douglass outscored Bluestem 25-8.
Austin Titus added four, and Drew Chadic had two for the Bulldogs.
Joshua Muckenthaler and Cooper Minnick both had a pair of threes in the first half. Bluestem had a 21-point second quarter and led 33-30 at halftime. Dylan Emmons and Michael Hurd both had six in the third as the Lions added to their led before Douglass rallied. Hurd had a team-high 15. Minnick finished with 11.
Douglass girls 50, Bluestem 35
The Bulldogs started pulling away from Bluestem’s girls basketball team in the third quarter of Tuesday’s game. But it wasn’t until the fourth when they got plenty of breathing room.
Douglass outscored 34-18 in the second half after a tight first half to win 50-35.
Senior Sarah Wright took control in the third quarter, when she made three baskets and had eight of her 12 points. Zoey Green had six in the fourth quarter, when the Bulldogs made seven baskets and went 8 for 11 at the free throw line to seal the game. Green also finished with 12 points.
Bayley Nispel and Janelle Fowler both finished with six points for the Bulldogs. Cashlyn Munroe added five points.
The Lions stayed with Douglass in the early goings. Maddie Heck and Hannah Davis both scored seven points in the first half. But the Lions only managed six points in the third quarter as Douglass pulled away.
Davis finished with a team-high 12 points. Heck scored 10. Gabrielle Albers added six, Brandee Oliver had four and Katlin Jurging had two.
