Augusta's boys basketball team got off to a hot start shooting the ball and forced nine first-quarter turnovers to start Tuesday night's game at Circle. After Circle was called for two technical fouls and had a player ejected, the Orioles finished off the Thunderbirds for a 67-50 win.
Chase Winter, Kesten Trebbe and Connor Hurst all hit a 3-pointer in the opening quarter as the Orioles jumped out to a fast start with a 12-2 lead. Trebbe had his best shooting night of the young season by draining three 3-pointers. He finished with 13 points and several steals as he set the tempo defensively.
Winter had a big night. He played aggressively on defense, got to the rim and got the Orioles out in the open court. He finished with a team-high 18 points and added three assists.
The Orioles got balanced scoring throughout the lineup. Hurst, who played hard on offense, had a couple of putbacks and finished with 13 points.
Tristan Finch helped the Orioles start the game well with four of his six points in the opening quarter. Kyler Steinkamp converted a three-point play after hitting a jumper on the baseline. He finished with five points.
Kolton Schenker played high near the rim on several plays, using his athletic ability for a couple of easy backdoor lobs. He made three field goals in the paint and finished with 11 points.
Caleb Laubhan added a basket in the fourth quarter, and Caleb Dunn added a point.
Augusta finished with 11 steals; Circle had a total of 19 turnovers. Augusta had 13 assists to Circle's 11.
The Orioles (1-2) will play home against Andale Friday night.
