Bluestem’s girls basketball team won its first two games of the Oxford basketball tournament last week. But to win the championship Saturday, the Lions would have to go through the foughest foe and beat tournament-host Oxford. It was a nailbiter, but the Lions defeated Oxford 42-40 after pulling away in the final seconds. The Lions finished 3-0 to win the championship; they already had beaten Tyro 37-10 and Flint Hills 35-13. “The team truly showed that they have been working hard and are willing to do whatever it takes to continue to win,” said head coach Branigun Gomez. Two Lions’ players, Candis Remsberg and Gabrielle Albers, earned All-Tournament Team honors. Remsberg averaged 8.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Albers averaged 3.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Brandee Oliver averaged 11.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, and Hannah Davis averaged 8.3 points and 3.8 steals per game for the Lions. “Winning the tournament is a big momentum shift for us to start the team on the right track before we start games in the CPL,” Gomez said. The Lions will play Douglass Tuesday, Wichita Independent Friday and Wichita Trinity next week. “These are all going to be tough matchups for us and we just need to carry over the momentum from the tournament,” Gomez said.
