  • Coach Brandon Terry gave a lot of Augusta's younger wrestlers a chance to step up for Thursday's varsity home dual against Bluestem. The Orioles did not disappoint. Augusta won six of seven matches all with pins in convincing fashion. Bluestem, a smaller, 3A school, also had six open weights as Augusta rolled to a 78-6 win. Augusta won three of five junior varsity matches at the end of the night. “We've seen some good things,” coach Brandon Terry said. “They're a smaller school, and we expected to get after them. You never know with some of the JV kids. This is their first time out there, but several of them stepped up. We only lost a couple matches, and those really could've went either way.” Terry said that the younger wrestlers have been learning from the team's veterans that hard work in the practice room pays off. Nathan Moore (113 pounds) started the action with the fastest pin of the night. He quickly charged at Bluestem's Sam Babb and tackled him for a takedown, then stayed on top for a pin with only 11 seconds elapsed. Sophomore Ralph Caggiano (126 pounds) also got a quick pin after his first takedown. Kalaeb Bratton (132) led 2-1 after the first period before getting a pin of Trenton Navarro at the 3:32 mark. Conner Spellman (138) lifted and drove Adam Wolfe for the second takedown of the first period of their match. Spellman stayed on top for a pin. Freshman Rob Winzer (152) grabbed Brendan Turner in a headlock on the mat and eventually got him in the stack position for a pin as Turner was unable to move. Lane Moran (145) got the Lions' lone varsity victory. He was able to cradle Shane Bosley on the mat and got him in a stack position for a pin midway throught the third period. Bosley had fallen behind 2-0 in the first, then worked to pull within a point at the second-period buzzer by defending a shot and circling around for a takedown. He tied it 4-4 in the third before getting pinned. Cody Thompson (160) and Darrien Hollinger (170) won the final two matches of the night. In JV action, Logan Martindale (138), Andrew Duncan (145) and Noah Cook (152) all got wins for the Orioles. Augusta's wrestling team is competing at the Douglass Goodwill tournament today. Among the tough teams that will be there include Topeka Seaman, which has some top-ranked Class 5A wrestlers.
