Savanna Nichols, daughter of Larry and Becky Nichols of Augusta and a fourth grader at Ewalt Elementary, is a repeat winner of the KPTS Wichita Young Authors Contest.
This past week she learned that she had taken third place in her age group with her story "Hercules and the Time Machine." The story about a chiuaua and it's amazing time machine dog house also includes her own colorful illustrations.
Savanna had some stiff competition from approximately 200 other students, but she's competed before -- and won.
As a first grader her story "Ham & Cheese" was also a winning entry in the annual contest.
And last May, she was the first place winner in the Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom (KFAC) and the Kansas State University College of Agriculture Postcard Art Contest. She enjoyed a trip to Topeka and a meeting with Governor Sam Brownback.
The most recent accomplishment garnered her a $50 gift certificate at Watermark Books in Wichita, a sketch pad and art supplies, and a pizza party for her entire class after the holidays.
In addition to her winnings, Savanna will also be a guest at the KPTS studio in January and be recorded reading her story, which will be used for a commercial to air on the Public Broadcasting Station.
