Kristie Haskell of Augusta was named the Kansas Teacher of the Week.
Kristie Haskell, early childhood teacher for Garfield, has received the Kansas Teacher of the Week Award.
In its fifth year, this award program is sponsored by Wichita Mid-Continent Airport and University of Kansas Athletics. Valerie Wise, Wichita Airport Authority, notifies the award recipients and said that being involved with this project is the most rewarding part of her job.
Wise said the winning teacher each week receives two tickets to a home football or men’s basketball game, plus a $50 gift card to Teller’s Restaurant in Lawrence. Also, Bob Davis, voice of the Jayhawks, announces the teacher and his/her school during the broadcast of the game they attend, as well as during the game prior to that.
In correspondence regarding Haskell's award, Wise said, "I spoke with Kristie Haskell’s grandmother, who is very proud of her. About five months before her dad’s death, she and her dad attended a KU vs. Oklahoma game. Kristie will receive two tickets to the Jan. 26 KU vs. Oklahoma game."
In her comments, Wise also cited Haskell's involvement with Relay for Life. After her father passed, Haskell was chairman of Augusta's Relay for Life committee for two years and has subsequently been heavily involved with the event each year.
Teachers can be nominated for the Kansas Teacher of the Week online at http://www.kuathletics.com/ or www.flywichita.com. KU Athletics staff review the nomination forms and make the selections.
