  • Augusta wrestlers take second in Pratt, Goldenstein, Hill win title

  • The Augusta wrestling team made its presence felt in the first tournament of the season Saturday in Pratt.
     
    The Orioles took second place in the team standings with 162 points and had two individual champions, both of whom came into the season ranked in their respective divisions.
     
    The Orioles beat third-place Buhler (140.5) and two-time state champion and No. 3 ranked Andale (136.5), which took fourth place, though the Indians led the way with four champions. Wichita Northwest, which won the team title, had three champions. Buhler also had two champions.
     
    Jake Goldenstein won his first tournament title of the season with a pair of pins to win the 106-pound bracket. Goldenstein pinned Pratt's Trae Foreman midway through the second period.
     
    Jacob Hill dominated the 170-pound bracket to win his first championship of the season. He pinned Northwest's Jose Guadarrama early in the second period of the title match.
     
    Colby Willis (195) won his first two matches with pins before losing to Andale's Derrick Gates in the championship via pin. Chance Runnion (220) also won his first two matches with pins before losing in the championship to Buhler's Jon Yates.
     
    Nathan Moore (113) went 3-1 on the day and handled Buhler's Nathan Elliot 12-1 to take third place in his division. Wright Bosley (182) also was 3-1 and took third place after pinning Northwest's Andre Turner.
     
    Colton Clayborn (152) took third place by winning four straight matches after losing the opener to eventual champion Jake Gehring (Buhler).
     
    Quentin Spainhower (160) took third place after pinning Pratt's Taylor White in the consolation championship. Spainhower's only loss was to Andale's Kyle Armstrsong in the second round, who went on to win the title. Armstrong narrowly pinned Spainhower in the final 30 seconds.
     
    Ralph Caggiano (120) was 1-2 and took fourth place.
     
    - In junior varsity competition at the Emporia tournament, Jacob Riddle won the 182B bracket championship. Andrew Duncan (152C), Darrien Hollinger (170A) and Dalton Watts (182A) took second place. Tyler Hildibrand (113A), Shane Bosley (152B) and Brandon Lasiter (170C) took third. Ian O'Laughlin (195A) was fourth.
