The lone representative from the El Dorado Wildcats cross country team at the state meet at Wamego Country Club represented El Dorado well.
EHS senior Sam Haines was the only Wildcats runner at the State Cross Country meet.
On a cool and brisk Saturday morning with the temperature dipping into the low 40s, with light wind at Haines’ back, he took to the Wamego course.
This was the first time Haines had competed at the state race in his high school career.
Haines finished with a time of 17:57.
He was able to run 37 seconds faster than when he ran the course at the Wamego Invitational on Sept. 8.
“I am happy that Sam earned a trip to the state meet. I know he was proud to be able to compete at state. I was nice to see him post the best time of his career for the course,” said El Dorado coach David Herrs.
Haines defeated half of his competitors as he finished 52nd out of 104.
Haines passed 4 or 5 runners as he approached the finish line ending his career on the Wildcat cross country team.
The AVCTL Division III was well represented at the meet. Three boys teams finished in the top 7. Two girls teams finished in the top 7.
