Herman Miller, who lives between Potwin and Whitewater, couldn’t believe what he saw when he dug up his sweet potatoes this year.
“I just planted one hill and when it grew up there was a place where a bunch grew and it pushed the dirt up 12 inches,” he said.
When he dug them up, he found the biggest sweet potato he had ever seen. It weighed 17 1/4 pounds.
In addition, there were several others around it that were 8 to 12 pounds.
“I wish I had dug them up earlier and taken it to the State Fair,” he said.
He gave seven or eight of the smaller ones away to his neighbors, but kept the largest one. He plans to cut it up and eat it.
He said his daughter likes to make fries out of sweet potatoes. He said it will cover over and they will keep eating it.
