EL DORADO—Something awoke in the Orioles after they lost the first set to Collegiate’s volleyball team Tuesday at the El Dorado Triangular.

The Orioles played more fiercely and intensely. Casady Marlnee started pounding the ball for kills. Kalie Robinson served three straights aces. Augusta rolled to force a deciding third set.

Collegiate easily won the third set to win 25-15, 17-25, 25-9.

Augusta did the same thing against El Dorado. The Orioles played with sound mechanics and a bit of extra fervor to edge El Dorado in the first set. The Wildcats’ defense picked up, particularly at the net, to take Set 2, and the Orioles simply fell apart in the final set as El Dorado won 23-25, 25-21, 25-14. El Dorado won the triangular on its senior night after winning another close three-set match against Collegiate 20-25, 25-19, 25-23.

It wasn’t easy for the Orioles to play six straight sets. They played well, but lost a bit of accuracy and zip on some of their hits, and most of them didn’t finish with the same intensity they started with.

Destiny Williams did a lot of everything for the Orioles. Williams had team highs in kills (8), blocks (4) and assists (9) against El Dorado. She scored the first three kills in the opening set against the Wildcats, then had three assists to help build a 12-8 Oriole lead. El Dorado rattled off five straight points before Casady Marlnee scored a kill on a Williams assist.

Kalie Robinson later had an ace and Williams and Katy Nordman teamed for a block to break a tie and give Augusta a 20-16 lead on way to winning the set.

El Dorado, which has two or three girls taller than all the Orioles, picked up its defense. The Wildcats consistently stopped letting hits get through at the net. They combined for six blocks and only allowed six offensive points by the Orioles.

In the night’s final set, Williams had a block and a kill in the early goings, but the Orioles missed several hits that were out of bounds as El Dorado rolled to take the match.

Marlnee finished with six total kills. Nordman had four kills, a block and an ace. Jenna Lynch had an ace and a kill. Robinson had three aces. Morgan Kirk also had nine assists.

Against Collegiate, which Augusta defeated Saturday at the Lady Cat Classic, the Orioles had no answers for Maddie Lett, who scored a team-high 13 kills and had two blocks for the Spartans.

After losing the first set, Augusta went on a 7-1 run early after Williams started looking for Marlnee, who came up with some big hits. The Orioles later had a 7-0 run midway through the set after three straight kills, one each by Mariah Zerr, Nordman and Williams. Collegiate gave the Orioles a bit of a scare at the end, but Kirk scored an ace to finish the second set.

Phillips, Nordman and Marlnee all had a kill early in the final set, but the errors crept in and the Spartans capitalized.

Nordman finished with a team-high eight kills, two of which were tap kills. Marlnee finished with six and a block. Phillips had three kills and an ace. Williams had four kills, an ace and 13 assists. Kirk had two aces and seven assists. Robinson had four aces and a kill. Taylore Emond had two blocks.

- Augusta’s junior varsity team picked up a pair of two-set wins Tuesday.

The Orioles started off slowly in the opening set against Collegiate as the Spartans jumped to a 6-0 lead. But the Orioles rallied throughout the set and came out on top after it went to a tiebreaker. They closed the second set to win 26-24, 25-21.

Augusta had no trouble with El Dorado, especially in the second set after winning 25-17, 25-3.

- Augusta will compete in the Hillsboro Invitational Tournament Saturday. The Orioles, who are seeded No. 6 with a 12-18 overall record, play Rock Creek (17-14), Circle (18-13) and Conway Springs (11-17) in pool play.

The top two teams from each pool advance to bracket play. Hillsboro (28-2), the defending Class 3A state champion, Chapman (3-20). Sterling (14-16) and Minneapolis (11-14) are in the other pool.
