Chandler Nusz carried the Orioles to the lead, and Gannon Marcotte made sure Augusta kept it with big plays on both side of the ball as the freshman football team defeated Ark City 27-12 Monday night at Hillier Stadium.
Nusz finished with 152 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, most of which came in the first half. The Orioles fumbled on their opening possession, but recovered a fumble on Ark City's first play to get back in business. Nusz later followed two lead blocks on a sweep to the left for the game's first score.
Ark City returned the ensuing kickoff deep into Oriole territory before Logan Martindale made a touchdown-saving tackle. The Bulldogs still scored on the drive, but trailed 7-6 after a missed conversion.
The Orioles had several chances to score deep in the red zone during the second quarter, but Ark City held the Orioles out of the end zone.
Marcotte carried the load in the second half, finishing with 15 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Marcotte scored on touchdown runs of 15 and eight yards. He also scored a pick-six late in the game to seal the win. Marcotte had three interceptions and a sack for the game.
The Orioles did catch a break when an inadvertent whistle erased a long Ark City touchdown that could've brought the Bulldogs within a score, though there was less than minute left in the game.
