Arlington Street is only two blocks long, bracketed on the north by Delmar and on the south by Skyview, but neighbors who live there feel a strong sense of community as was exhibited by the celebration of the 40th Annual Arlington Street Ice Cream Social held Sept. 16.
Long before neighborhood nights out became the “in thing,” the Arlington Street residents enjoyed the once-a-year chance to meet and greet new neighbors, renew acquaintances, share stories of events of the past year and sample the many varieties of home-made ice cream, cake and cookies prepared by those in attendance.
The first such gathering was hosted by Dick and Evelyn Barnard and Felix and Janice Adams in l973.
Weather has never cancelled the event, which is usually held the end of August or the first of September. Many times the weather has been very hot, sometimes cool, but only once were the participants forced inside because of rain. This year’s social was held on an exceptionally beautiful Kansas early fall evening.
In 1997, the 25th anniversary of the event, another tradition was started. Doyle Fox fashioned a clock from a piece of walnut wood left by his deceased neighbor and fellow woodworker, John Payne. That year the clock was awarded to Noel and Betty Russell who had lived on the street the longest time. After the death of her husband, Betty Russell donated the clock as a traveling award, going each year to the residents of Arlington Street, present at the social that year, who have lived on the street the longest time and not received the clock before. This year’s recipients were Josh and Amy Hall.
This year’s celebration was expanded to a picnic because of the significance of the 40th anniversary. Former neighbors and families of present neighbors were invited. Josh and Amy Hall hosted the picnic on their driveway, assisted by their children, Paxton and Harper Hall, and co-hosts Tad and Tricia Schlesener, James and Latisha Crenshaw with children Makell, Merek and Mavilyn, and Phil and Sheila Johnson. Josh, along with Tad and Tricia, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs while Amy, James and Latisha set up the tables for side dishes brought by those attending. Phil and Sheila greeted the neighbors and took attendance.
Other current residents attending were Ed and Brenda Nyberg, Tom and Sherry Hermreck, Rhonda McAdoo, Tony and Louise Jacquez, Larry and Liz McNown, Bonnie Richards, Betty Wagoner, Sandy Manspeaker, Warren Baker, Mason Arnold, and Ernie and Eleanor Sifford.
Families and guests included Loy and Delores Campbell, Eva Spencer, Carl and Doris Guggisberg, Gordon and Joan Clark, Steve and Bev Love, Orville and June Collins, Tim, Lindsay, Everleigh and Aliza Shumate, Connie Carpenter, Emma Brewer, Katie Vanderford, Eliott and Riley Brewer and Mandee Mabe.
