It was a sunny and mild Saturday morning at Centennial Park for El Dorado Wildcat runners participating in the Newton Invitational.

Many quality teams attend ed the meet.

"We know that we could have ran very well and still be unable to score well as a team," said El Dorado head coach David Herrs. "We had not seen Dodge City, Lawrence Free State, or Liberal yet this season."

El Dorado had 2 boys and 2 girls who were unable to run due to injury on Saturday.

"We hope to be much closer to full strength next Saturday when we host our home meet. The injuries were most noticeable at the boys' varsity level where two of our usual top five runners did not compete," said Herrs.

The Lady Wildcats top finishers were Faith Hadley and Tori Gricol coming in 23rd and 46th place overall.

"It was also nice to see Faith Hadley and Tori Gricol continue to post improved times as this season progresses," said Herrs.

Top finishers for the boys were Sam Haines at 28th and Breck Towner at 31st. Towner posted a course PR by 4 seconds.

"It was nice to see Breck Towner and Jacob Anders run at a PR pace," said Herrs.

El Dorado continues to be reasonably competitive with schools that are near their size.

"We know we still need to improve to challenge these schools, however. As we approach the league and regional meets, we know we need to work hard to reach the next level of performance," said Herrs.

The Wildcats will host their home invitational this Saturday at 9:45 a.m. at the El Dorado State Park's Bluestem Point.
