Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital is offering a fun way for people to become informed about breast cancer.

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is October, the hospital is again sponsoring a puzzle piece event, "Collecting Awareness One Piece At A Time," where participants gather puzzle pieces from participating businesses.

Twenty businesses will have puzzle pieces again and the public is tasked with collecting them all, taping the puzzle together with their name on the back and returning it to the hospital Radiology Department by Oct. 29. Everyone will get a prize for participating and get their name entered into a drawing, which will be held during the open house on Oct. 29.

"It's basically just to promote breast cancer awareness and get people aware we are here and do mammograms Monday through Friday, as well as how important it is to keep on top of their breast health," said Gale Ray, special procedures technologist with SBA.

One change to the puzzle piece event was that it was expanded from being one week last year to running throughout the month of October. Their hope is this will allow more people to take part in it.

"We did pretty well last year considering it was only a week," Ray said. "We hope to let more people get involved."

People can get a list of businesses and rules from the x-ray department in the hospital or the businesses are listed below.

Participating businesses include: Scooters Coffee House, 142 N. Main; Circle Gallery, 315 S. Main; Art of Life Chiropractic, 311 S. Main; Friendship Star Quilt Co., 201 S. Main; Sweet 120, 142 N. Main, Ste. 120; Walter's Flower and Interiors, 124 N. Main; Post, 124, S. Main, Ste. 101; Heads-n-Toes, 231 N. Main; Robin's, 103 S. Main; Glitter Bug, 223 N. Main; Sherwin Williams, 2420 W. Central; The Book Grinder, 2222 W. Central; Wilson Chiropractic, 215 N. Vine; Salon H, 110 E. Pine; Mane Attraction, 121 E. 6th Ave.; El Dorado YMCA, 300 N. Main; Shelter Insurance, 1236 W. Central; Stone Creek Nursery, 15 Metcalf Rd.; The Parlor, 101 N. Main; and El Dorado FroYo, 135 N. Main.

The event will culminate with an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 29 in the hospital lobbby, held by the SBA Mammographers. They will serve cupcakes and punch, as well as have drawings for gifts and information on breast cancer and breast health. Among the prizes include a quilt donated by Friendship Star Quilt Co. and various baskets. The drawing will be held at 3 p.m.

"They loved it," Ray said of last year's event. "People really enjoyed going out to the businesses and they had a good time, especially the ones who did it with friends."
