Augusta's boys soccer team won its second game of the season with a 2-0 victory against Wichita Independent Thursday in the consolation bracket of the McPherson tournament.
Freshman Brandon Denoncourt made an assist to Kyler Steinkamp for an Oriole goal, and Mason Hiser scored a goal on an assist from Zane Nickel.
The Orioles will play for fifth place against Maize South at 10 a.m. Saturday. Maize South defeated Independence 8-0.
The Orioles went 2-1 in their home quadrangular Thursday night. Augusta dominated Wellington in the opening match 25-10, 25-8, then beat McPherson 25-16, 25-16.
Against Circle in the night's final match, The Orioles won the first set, but Circle came out on top of a back-and-forth tiebreaker in the second set. The Thunderbirds went on to win the third set to finish the match 18-25, 28-26, 25-8.
Middle school football
Augusta's middle school football teams split their games with Haysville. The Bluejays' 7th-grade team crushed the Hawks 40-6 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Corbin Barnett, Blake Bevan and Noah Johnson all scored touchdown runs for the Bluejays. Corbin Collier scored on a 54-yard punt return for a touchdown, and Jacob Swink ran back a fumble recovery 29 yards for a score. All of the Bluejays' points came in the first half.
The 8th-grade team lost to the Hawks 14-6. Raef Hilt scored on a three-yard run to put Augusta ahead 6-0. Haysville scored on a big touchdown run to tie the game 6-6 before halftime.
The Hawks added a touchdown in the third quarter and held Augusta scoreless in the second half. The Bluejays drop to 0-2 on the season.
