LaVena F. Johnston, 93, of El Dorado, died Wednesday morning at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. The celebration of her life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow the services in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.
La Vena was born Jan. 1, 1919 on her family farm in New Plymouth, Idaho, the daughter of Samuel and Ethel (Eby) High. After graduating from high school, she attended college in McPherson. She completed her college at Friends University. At McPherson College, she met and married Chester Johnston on Aug. 24, 1938. He preceded her in death April 17, 1977. They came to El Dorado in 1958 from Wichita. LaVena began her teaching career at Washington Elementary. She taught Second Grade for 28 years.
She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church. She was an avid reader, golfer and loved to travel. Surviving family include one daughter, Mrs. Gary (Jolene) Bolin of Edmond, Okla.; sons Larry Johnston of Kansas City and Bob Johnston of Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, three sisters and four brothers.
