Christian music lovers in and around Andover will have a chance to see one of the top male vocalists and possibly appear in a movie.
Christian music superstar Mitch McVicker, a Gospel Music Association Dove Award-winning singer-songwriter, will be performing in Andover at Hope Community Church Saturday, Aug. 4, at 7 p.m. McVicker is bringing his “Walking Through the Dark ” tour for a very special, one-of-a-kind concert.
In addition to his latest songs, McVicker will be performing some of the hit songs he co-wrote with Christian music icon Rich Mullins. While McVicker and his band perform the Mullins songs, a film crew will be in the house shooting concert footage of the band and crowd to be used in the full-length motion picture, “Rich Mullins: A Ragamuffin Legacy.” Color Green Films is producing the motion picture, which is scheduled for release in 2013.
McVicker and Mullins, who met while both were attending Friends University, co-wrote numerous songs including the mega-hit “My Deliverer,” which in 1999 won GMA Song of the Year after being included on “The Jesus Record,” an album released 10 months after Mullins’ accidental death in 1997.
“Walking Through the Dark” is McVicker’s latest mini-CD. Born and raised in Kansas, McVicker said this CD’s songs reflect where he is in his life right now.
“As I look around my world, often I find myself thinking we’re just a bunch of pretenders,” McVicker said. “Faith does not mean neat, nor is goodness synonymous with comfort. Living a life of hope does not mean living a life of clarity, free of questions and confusion.”
“I’m incredibly excited to have Mitch include us on his tour this summer,” said Eric Hauck, Hope’s Worship Arts pastor. “Bringing in someone who has achieved what Mitch has in the music industry is a pretty big coup for Andover and Hope.”
Hauck and McVicker were both members of Mullins’ Ragamuffin Band.
“It will be nice to see some old friends,” Hauck said, “but I’m very happy to be able to help make this happen for people here in the Wichita area.”
The concert is free of charge and open to the public. A love offering will be collected.
Hope Community Church is located at 1831 E. 21st North, next to the Andover exit on the Kansas Turnpike.
