In honor of the El Dorado YMCA’s 10th anniversary, there have  been special events all month.

On Friday evening, the Y hosted a reception for members.

“Thank you for coming,” said Tim Connell. “I’m grateful for you all coming out here tonight. We are nearing the end of a month-long celebration.”

Connell thanked the efforts of the staff members and volunteers and gave a brief history of how the YMCA came to be in El Dorado.

“Some of you younger people might not remember that this was the old Safeway,” he said. “Then it was a health club.”

After the health club closed, a group of community members, led by Bob Lane and Jennifer Callaway,
“Isn’t it hard to believe it’s been 10 years since we gathered here to celebrate our hard  work?” asked Callaway. “It was a testament to our community and working together.”

She shared about the initial fundraising effort and all of the hard work and dedication it took to raise $5 million to build the facility.

“The community responded,” she said. “It was so important to have the support.”

Dennis Schoenebeck, Executive Director of the Wichita YMCA, also addressed those in attendance.

“Thank you all very much,” he said. “We do want to make this bigger and better, and we’ll work with the local board and hopefully we’ll see that happen.”
