Questions to Mayor McKibban
I have several comments and questions for Mayor McKibban regarding the story in the Saturday (July 14) El Dorado Times. I don't understand how the Mayor could make the statement, "Really, they haven't given a dollar to the stadium," when in fact the American Legion has donated as much toward the project than most other contributors. The American Legion was paid $226,000 for 38 acres for the stadium project. That land had been appraised by the Butler County Tax Appraiser at $39,000 per acre or $1,482,000. If you subtract the $226,000 from the appraised value that means the American Legion donated $1,256,000 in good (land) for the community project. So shouldn't the naming of the complex be after the American Legion?
I can understand why the Mayor misstated the amount that the American Legion was asked to donate toward the flag plaza since he was not present at that meeting. The people who were at that meeting, besides myself, know the American Legion was asked to donate $50,000. I would hope that one or both of those people would come forward and clarify the Mayor's misstatement.
The statement by the Mayor, "At no time that I know of was it ever going to be called the American Legion Sports Complex," is correct. The Mayor was not present at the American Legion executive board meetings or general membership meetings. Any number of American Legion members can attest to the statement that was made by persons now on the EFABC board and the City of El Dorado. The last time that it was admitted the project was going to be called The American Legion Veterans Sports Complex was on Sunday, May 20, 2012. Again this was only stated between myself and two other people associated with the project. Other people can verify that a meeting did take place, but were not present when the statement was made. Again I would hope one or both of those people would come forward and clarify the Mayor’s misstatement.
It would also be interesting for the three parties making up the EFABC to list the monies that they have contributed to this community project. If my memory is correct the City of El Dorado did not donate any tax payer money for the project. Also USD 490 did not donate any monies toward the project and instead may be entering into some type of lease agreement for use of the complex. Now as for the Butler College they play everything pretty close to the vest, including spending money to build two classrooms at the new tax payer funded Fire Station located at 6th and Village Road.
My understanding from the beginning was that the stadium project was going to be completed by donations and that no tax payer money would be involved. If that is correct shouldn't the value of the property at least justify the naming of the complex?
I have learned some very important things in my life: that your word means something, honor cannot be regained once lost, and when you shake a person’s hand and look them in the eye your statement is binding. Unfortunately times have changed and these values and belief do not seem to exist anymore.
