Reports from local news outlets indicate that one of the victims of the July 20 shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., has ties to Andover.
KAKE 10 in Wichita reported that Dawna Nygaard, of Andover, is the mother of 26-year-old Jonathan Blunk, who was killed trying to protect his girlfriend. Wichita’s KWCH 12 reported that his stepfather and two brothers also live in Andover. The family went to Aurora last weekend to attend a candlelight vigil and visit the site of the shooting.
The Denver Post reported that Blunk was killed while trying to protect his girlfriend, 21-year-old Jansen Young. According to the Post, Young said Blunk threw her on the floor and covered her when the shots started. She said he pushed her under the seat and eventually stopped moving. Young said they had been dating since October.
Blunk was estranged from his wife, Chantel Blunk, who lives in Reno, Nev., with their two children.
Nygaard and the rest of the family are preparing to transport Blunk to Reno for his funeral. The Post reported that Blunk graduated from high school in Reno and enlisted in the Navy in 2004. He left the Navy, separated from his wife and moved to Colorado in 2009.
According to KWCH, a fund has been established to help the family cover its expenses for the trip and the funeral. Donations can be made to the Dawna and Lee Nygaard Donation Account at Equity Bank in Andover.
