  • Augusta Thunder win 18U-C World Series

  •   The Augusta Thunder softball team finished 1-1 in pool play of the USSSA 18U-C Fastpitch World Series in Kansas City this past weekend.  After that, though, the Thunder ran the table. They won six straight games in bracket play to win the World Series championship, which included a 6-2 win against the Carl Junction Tornados Saturday in the title game. A total of 26 teams from Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma competed. The Thunder, comprised of girls from Augusta High School’s softball team, as well as area teams like Douglass, Bluestem and Andover Central, collected two individual awards. Caitlin Caswell, who will be a junior at Winfield next school year, earned the Outstanding Pitcher award for the tournament. Casady Marlnee, who was a sophomore at Bluestem last year, was named the tournament Most Valuable Player. Other girls on the team are Madison Marcotte, Jaden Strobel (Andover Central), Jordann Smith (Andover Central), Haley O’Brien, Alie Divine, Leslie Burkett, Shaeli Munroe (Douglass), Abby Tipton and Taryn Wallace. The Thunder are coached by Todd Marcotte, Jessica Marcotte and Jack Lawson The Thunder started bracket play with a 9-6 victory against the Missouri Knockouts. The Thunder then were matched with the York Fusion, who had a first-round bye. Augusta won a close game 5-4. The Thunder then beat the OK Ice 8-4 and St. Louis Insanity 3-2. In the semifinal round, the Thunder topped the Tornados 4-0. The Tornados came out of the consolation bracket for another shot at the Thunder, but Augusta won again to win the title.
