The Kanas Cannons exploded for eight runs in the top of the first inning Friday en route to a 15-10 victory over the Newton Rebels in the first round of the Midwest Regional Qualifying Tournament at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Now 22-16, the Cannons will play the No. 2 seed Derby Twins at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Ty Kildow beat out an infield hit to open the game and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. After a walk, Ryan Tracy reached on an error to load the bases.
With one out, Blaine Hashagen and Josh Halbert walked to force in two runs. Two more scored to make it 4-0 when Taylor Fish was safe on an error.
Both Halbert and Fish wound up scoring on wild pitches, and a two-run single by Stoffregen made it 8-0.
After Newton scored twice in the bottom of the first, the Cannons got them both back in the top of the second. Hashagen doubled in one run, and the other scored on an error to make it 10-2.
A sacrifice fly in the third made it 11-3, Cannons. They added three more runs in the sixth as Stoffregen drove in two, and Sammons one. A single by James Threw in the seventh made the count 15-5, Cannons.
The Rebels scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh for the final tally.
The Cannons scored their 15 runs with 12 hits and four Newton errors. Threw collected three hits, while Stoffregen (four RBIs) and Hashagen (three RBIs) each had two.
Ryan Scoles started the game for the Cannons. Although he gave up nine runs in 6 1/3 innings, he got credit for the win.
