Carol Wohlford, director of the Andover Public Library the past nine years, tendered her resignation at the July 11 board meeting. It will be effective at the end of business Sept. 7.
“Working for APL, the Board of Directors, and being part of this wonderful family has been an extraordinary experience,” Wohlford said. “I could not ask for a better group of colleagues. I have grown in many ways here and will always treasure the opportunities provided for me by APL.”
Library board president Jennifer Blickenstaff echoed the sentiments of many in the community.
“The board will greatly miss Carol,” she said. “All that she has accomplished for the Andover Public library is really beyond words.”
Among Wohlford’s many accomplishments was to guide the library in relocating to Central Park. Previously, the library had been in the building that currently houses the Andover Historical Museum on North Andover Road.
“Because of the strong board that we’ve always had, the incredible staff that we’ve always had, and the support from the patrons and the community, the library is on an incredible foundation,” Wohlford said.
“We appreciate all her service and time for our community,” Blickenstaff said. “She will leave us in good hands and help mentor us in the process of getting a new director.”
The search for a new director would begin immediately.
“I think we’ll get some really good applicants from the state of Kansas,” Blickenstaff said. “If we need to go nationally, we will.”
Wohlford leaves for personal reasons and “… with conflicted feelings” to become the director of the Eudora Public Library.
“We fully support her and are very excited for her moving back to an area where she would like to eventually retire, although I don’t see that happening any time soon,” Blickenstaff said.
Eudora is in northeast Kansas, a few miles east of Lawrence, Wohlford’s hometown. All of her children soon will be living in Lawrence as well.
“While I will miss my friends here at APL, I do feel that it is time to go home,” she said, “and time for new challenges and experiences for me.”
