A 16-year-old Andover resident was killed Wednesday afternoon as a result of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident six miles north of Andover.
According to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Janel Nichole Balmer was northbound on Butler Road at about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday when she failed to yield at a stop sign at Kansas Highway 254. As she attempted to cross the highway, her 2002 Dodge van was struck broadside by a 2007 Dodge van.
Balmer was transported in critical condition to St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, where she later died from her injuries. KHP reported she was not wearing a safety restraint.
The driver of the other vehicle, Zelma M. Bahm, 83, and a passenger, 87-year-old Herbert Paul Bahm, both of Wichita, were transported to St. Francis in serious condition. Zelma Bahm was reported as using a safety restraint, while Herbert Bahm was not.
Andover Fire and Rescue responded to assist Benton firefighters at the scene.
