In a seesaw game, the Newton Rebels scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to ease back on top. Those runs turned out to be the winning runs as they held on for a 7-6 win June 29.
Back-to-back doubles by Josh Halbert and Scott Sammons, and a two-run single by James Threw’s single scored two put the Cannons on top 3-0 in the first.
Newton took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the first, three of them on a home run by Rodge Macy.
Threw singled in another run in the third to tie the game. A two-run home run by Scott Quinlan in the fifth put the Cannons back on top, 6-4.
But they couldn’t hold the lead, as the Rebels scored once in the fifth to pull within one. In the sixth, Newton scored twice to ease back in front, 7-6. What turned out to be the winning run scored on a base-loaded walk to Macy.
The Cannons threated in the eighth when they loaded the bases with one out. Halbert hit into a home-to-first double play to end the threat.
Three Cannons chipped in with a pair of hits each. Threw had three RBIs, and Quinlan knocked in two with his round-tripper.
The Cannons (14-11, 12-10 in league) travel to Hutchinson for a 7 p.m. game June 30. They return home July 1 for a doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m. with Topeka.
